Scots Quair を扱い、ヒロイン Chris の性的な発達過程を香りというモチーフとともに読み解く試みである。まず、Chris の性的な目覚めの様子をジプシーや見知らぬ男、父親との関わりの中に現れる嗅覚の描写をもとに概観する。ここでは、経験の乏しさから性の魅力と恐怖が拮抗する。そして、結婚に結実する性的な成熟を迎えると、Chris は特にスイカズラの香りを通して、夫 Ewan や婚外交渉の相手 Rob との関係を意識する。最後に、出産の経験をどのように Chris が嗅覚的に捉えているか簡潔に見る。興味深いことに、少女の時、Chris は母 Jean
